HOT STONE  MASSAGE

The massage therapist will hold the heated stones and apply gentle pressure gliding them on your body. The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.

Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones are placed on specific points of the body. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and use them like strong fingers and hands to massage certain areas of the body. The hot stones are usually made of basalt.

This is a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain a lot of heat. River rocks are normally used because they are so smooth. They have been smoothed over by water over time by the river’s current.

The stones are immersed in water and heated in an electric heating device until they are within a certain temperature range. It is best to place a thermometer in the heating tray so that you know the temperature at all times. This is a good safety practice. The stones may be placed at specific points on the back.

Also on the palms of the hand and between the toes. The heat warms and relaxes the muscles  allowing the therapist to apply deeper pressure when needed. The warmth of the hot stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.
